Dear Esther Coming To Steam February 14th, 2012
A new story-driven first-person game is on the way that seems to carry on in the likes of other story-driven first-person titles such as Penumbra Overture and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Dear Esther was originally a Source mod that gained famed for not being another dude-bro shooter but was instead a dramatic, story-oriented affair. Rob Briscoe of Mirror's Edge fame is the dev behind the game and he and publisher TheChineseRoom already have a release date set for the eerie new thriller.
As stated in the press release...
Originally launched as a Source mod in 2007, Dear Esther has gained a cult following, critical acclaim and a number of international awards, including Best World/Story at Indiecade 2009. The extraordinary success of the mod, with over 100,000 downloads, prompted thechineseroom to begin a collaboration with Mirror’s Edge artist Rob Briscoe on a commercial rebuild powered by Valve’s Source Engine technology.
I guess it goes to show you that you don't always need the latest technology to do something original and unique. Too bad big publishers can't be convinced of that notion.
Anyway, Dear Esther sees players taking on the role of a man lost on a mysterious island after a crash. He's trying to piece back together his memories while uncovering clues scattered throughout the eerie, deserted island.
Only brief snippets of fly-throughs were shown on the website, along with concept art and screenshots. I'm sure we'll get more info as the release date for the game draws near.
In the meantime you can learn more about Dear Esther by visiting the Official Website, and remember to look for the game exclusively on PC come February 14th, 2012.
