Deus Ex: Human Defiance Trademarked By Square Enix
The official title of Deus Ex 4 might be Deus Ex: Human Defiance. Square Enix, the publisher of the series, has filed a trademark for that name in Europe.
As is the case with most trademark applications, the app for Defiance (via NeoGAF) doesn't tell us much. It simply says that the mark applies to games, comic books, online entertainment services and other goods. That doesn't mean that the title will necessarily be used in those ways; it just means that Square Enix has the right to do it.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution, developed by Eidos Montreal, was released in August 2011. The game enjoyed strong reviews and solid sales. A sequel seems like a foregone conclusion.
The title Human Defiance suggests it's directly linked to the story of Human Revolution. Revolution was a prequel set 25 years before the first Deus Ex. Defiance, then, could easily be set anywhere in that quarter-century.
Eidos Montreal recently wrapped up work on Tomb Raider's multiplayer. The only other project they've announced is Thief 4.
