James Cameron was on hand at Ubisoft's E3 press conference to talk about the video game based on his upcoming film. One thing he continually stressed through his speech was the fact that the game wasn't some half-assed adaptation of the film.

Rather than mirroring the plot of the film, the game has a completely different story. Thus, they can release the game before the film without completely spoiling it. Cameron mentioned that he gave the developers a lot of leeway in designing the game's plot, so long as it fit within the universe constructed for the film.

"Neither the film or the game is the red-headed stepchild of the other," Cameron said. He said lots of other stuff too but I blacked out when he started to talk about Na'vi and tiger stripes and whatever.
