The latest gameplay video for Far Cry 3 focuses on one of the less-discussed selling points: player freedom. It shows off 13 minutes of the player simply exploring the game's open-world environment.
Far Cry 2 had a vast and beautiful open-world. However, it fell short in a few ways. Players were forced to commute back and forth across this world for missions. There were only a handful of bus stations to shorten the trip. Outposts encountered by players on their journey would be refilled with enemies right after you left. For Far Cry 3, Ubisoft has corrected both of this major issues. When the player wipes out an enemy outpost, friendly rebels will take control of the area. This will unlock new stores and quests. Furthermore, you'll be able to quick travel to these captured outposts. Ubisoft has also implemented a new hunting system to give you something to do when you wander off the beaten path. In FC2, you could kill animals but there was no point. In this game, you can scavenge your kills for supplies that can be sold or used for craftable items. Townspeople will give you hunting quests to complete as well. The net effect of all these changes is that you have concrete reasons to explore the world of Far Cry 3. Furthermore, if you'd rather just head to the next mission instead of putzing around, it'll be easy to do so. Back to top
