Gaming Without Controllers: SoftKinetic Evolves ArcadesAuthor: William Usher

It’s not often that we bring you news about technology that royally changes the landscape of gaming. Usually, news regarding video game evolution is attached to a new game engine that only gets employed after it becomes standard-fare. This time, however, the next-generation of gaming is fast approaching, and it doesn’t include joysticks, controllers or Wii-motes.
“Jumping Gym USA has always been at the forefront of innovation in the development of engaging interactive entertainment solutions,” said Nicky Chung, Jumpin Gym Digital Entertainment. “We selected Softkinetic’s 3D gesture recognition technology to offer our customers a set of new, intuitive and immersive gameplays.” Now I know a lot of you are thinking, “Hey, doesn’t the Eye-Toy already do this?” Yes, but this is the next step in gesture recognition. The Eye-Toy is good only for recognizing gestures as a 2D platform. SoftKinetic offers fully immersed, fully interactive 3D gesture recognition software and development kits that expands on the old-school 2D gesture recognition platform. Added to this, SoftKinetic has joined forces with Jumping Gym to allow SDKs to be used in their family entertainment centers in Hong Kong. “The arcade centers are very well suited for our gesture-based technology,” said Michel Tombroff, Softkinetic’s CEO. “We are delighted to work with Jumping Gym USA to bring casual and immersive video games to interactive entertainment market.” The SDK will be used in a fully interactive arcade environment, complete without controllers or joysticks. And if you didn’t know, there’s some innuendo in that last sentence I forgot to capitalize on, but don’t worry I’ll find a way to work into another article. You can learn more about Softkinetic by visiting their Official Website. To learn more about the family entertainment centers by Jumping Gym, feel free to check out their Official Website. |
