Guild Wars 2 Our Time Is Now Trailer Is Super Artsy

ArenaNet decided to get very fancy with the latest trailer for Guild Wars 2. They enlisted V for Vendetta director James McTeigue to create a live-action trailer for the MMORPG.

The trailer opens with an ash-covered corpse turning red. Then we see a gang of youths meet up in a dark alley to walk on hot coals. Then a beautiful woman in an evening gown swims through an opulent dining room. You know, standard video game trailer stuff.

The gameplay footage begins at 1:40. A group of adventurers from all of Tyria's races strut toward the camera, and then get ready to fight a grotesque, flying beast. In my opinion, this last twenty seconds or so is ten times more effective than all of the live-action artsy fare but what do I know.

Guild Wars 2 launched worldwide on August 28th. Over one million players pre-purchased the game. However, launch sales are only a small part of an MMO's success. They need to retain and grow that player base in the long run, even in the face of competing games. Perhaps this...interesting trailer will catch the attention of the unconverted masses.
