The Hot Shots Golf series is one of those beloved alternate takes on a traditional sport that understood the game it was mimicking intimately, while still changing things up to make it unique. Some of the best PGA games over the years copied the series, and there’s something to be said for such a sim based series taking key game mechanics from a whimsical title. Now, the guys at Camelot Software Planning, who created the first Hot Shots Golf game (subsequent titles were done by Clap Hanz), are back on the links and ready to deliver golfing like you’ve never seen. Or maybe never played is more accurate.
Camelot is currently developing We Love Golf! for the Wii, and aside from graciously not aborting the English language with extra “i’s,” they may just provide the first great golfing game for the Wii. Wii Sports Golf is barely passable as a golfing tech demo, and EA has done nothing for the Tiger Woods series on Wii to make it worthwhile. Which is odd, because out of all popular sports games you’d think golf would be a no brainer on Nintendo’s console. We Love Golf! is set to offer a realistic golfing experience to gamers. When you look past the cartoony characters and humorous interpretation of the sport in Hot Shots, there’s a lot of depth to the game. For many gamers, Hot Shots Golf is the epitome of great golfing on a console. A fact that EA realized when they took game mechanics from that series and incorporated them into Tiger Woods, which is ironically when the Tiger games got really good. Transforming your Wii remote into a virtual set of golf clubs, players will have to gauge the wind, distance, and even have to adjust for fade or draw by flicking their wrist. The challenge is going to be getting the level of precision needed to make the experience feel rewarding. A slow, easy, putt should result in a slowly moving ball. If that happens, then we’ll finally switch from our control pads to the Wii remote for golf gaming. We Love Golf! is set to release sometime in 2008. |
