I Am Alive ESRB Rating Reveals Groping, Throat Slashing

Ubisoft's I Am Alive was recently rated by the ESRB. The ratings board gave the survival action game a "Mature" rating due to its dark portrayal of a disaster zone.

I Am Alive takes place in Chicago after a 10.3 earthquake. In the midst of this chaos, the main character Adam Collins tries to find his girlfriend. The crumbling city isn't the only hazard, though. Other survivors will prove to be just as dangerous.

"From a third-person perspective, players traverse through city ruins and use a machete to kill human enemies in melee-style combat," says the ESRB description. "Battles are accompanied by realistic gunfire, slashing sounds, and cries of pain; characters emit brief splashes of blood when hit. Players have the ability to kill or knock unconscious wounded/vulnerable enemies via finishing moves (e.g., throat slashing, impaling, pistol-whipping); these scenes are highlighted by close-up camera angles and increased player control (e.g., on-screen prompts with button-press sequences)."

Some of the survivors Adam Collins encounters are simply desperate for food or water. However, the ESRB description suggests that some of the people remaining in the ruined city have more sinister motives.

"During the course of the game, players encounter women who can be saved from nearby enemies; sexual mistreatment is sometimes implied in the dialogue (e.g., 'These guys kept me as their pet, or mascot, or something.'). One sequence depicts the background silhouette of a man fondling and threatening a captured female survivor; the exchange includes phrases such as 'Do you hear me? Don't touch me!' and 'Don't be like that. You know I can make your life a lot easier if you would just cooperate.'"

Also, there's some cursing. The horror, the horror.

I Am Alive was supposed to arrive by the end of the year, last we heard. Ubisoft hasn't been talking about the game at all, though. A supposed gameplay trailer leaked at the end of August but Ubisoft never even confirmed whether it was legit.
