If any PlayStation Network game deserves to make the jump to physical media, it’s thatgamecompany’s Journey. The critical darling is set to be released in a collector’s edition bundle, packed in with two more of the developer’s digital hits, Flow and Flower.
Joystiq broke the news yesterday morning that thatgamecompany had spilled the beans on the upcoming collection, originally stating that no further details could be made available. The developer got back in contact with the site later in the day, reaffirming that the Journey Collector’s Edition was indeed “a thing,” and that additional details would be announced soon. Listings on both GameFly and Play-Asia, though have the game pegged for a release date of August.
thatgamecompany’s offerings have gotten better and better over the years. Flow hit PSN pretty early on in the console’s life cycle, taking players through a “life cycle” of their own. In Flow, players control an underwater creature, gobbling up lesser beings to grow big and strong while avoiding larger creatures.
Flower expanded the simple motion controls used in Flow, and upgraded the gameplay in a big way. Players were taken on a journey into the dreams of flowers, controlling the wind in a free-flying quest to collect flower petals and return the world to its former beauty.
And then there is Journey, the crowning achievement of the collection. With equally simplistic controls and enough heart to lighten the mood of at least a dozen Grinches, players go on a quest to reach a shining light at the top of the mountain, finding out about the game’s mysterious world along the way. It’s a unique, moving ride and one every gamer should experience.
Which is, of course, the beauty of a physical release. Now gamers without an internet connection can enjoy all the great games thatgamecompany has to offer. Now if only they’d pull back the curtain and supply us with a few more details.
