Just Dance 3 Tax Under ConsiderationAuthor: Pete Haas

William Fourkiller, a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives has come up with a new way to attack violent video games. He has proposed a bill that will place a 1% tax on sales of all games rated Teen, Mature, or Adults Only.
As Techland notes, there are a lot of Teen-rated games out there that aren't the slightest bit violent. The Sims 3, The Black Eyed Peas Experience, DiRT 2 and Just Dance 3 are just a few of the T-rated games that would be taxed under this bill. While I imagine there are some Just Dance 3 gamers whose rump-shaking might be described as "violent," that's probably not what the tax is trying to reduce. The revenue from this tax would be split between the "Childhood Outdoor Education Revolving Fund" and "Bullying Prevention Revolving Fund." These funds, which would be created by the bill, will work to stop kids from being fat and acting like dicks. Both problems never existed before video games. The most lasting effect of these funds, though, is that Fourkiller gets to tell voters that he took a stand against childhood obesity and bullying. What a mensch! As The Escapist notes, a similar tax was proposed in New Mexico back in 2008. That particular bill also applied to televisions and would've also funded outdoor education. It was ultimately defeated, though. If the Oklahoma bill passes, it will go into effect on July 1st. |
