Here's something we can all file under the category of “Why, God? WHY?!”: According to director Drew Goddard, a Left 4 Dead 2/Cabin in the Woods DLC tie-in was in the works back when the movie was fist being produced.
Don't worry, I'll be sure to let you know before I start giving away any important movie details. For those unfamiliar with Cabin in the Woods, the film is about a group of college kids who decide to take a weekend trip to a, you guessed it, cabin in the woods. From there, just about every horror movie cliché gets played out, but it's all for a very, very good reason. I'll leave it at that for now.
Left 4 Dead, as gaming fans well know, is a four-player zombie blast-a-thon. While the properties don't necessarily fit together like two peas in a pod, it's not hard to imagine how a crossover would have played out.
This report comes from Gameinformer, who discovered the heartbreaking revelation during a Reddit Q&A thread being run by Goddard.
Okay, here's the bit where those of you who have not seen Cabin in the Woods will want to tune out. Just do yourself a favor and see the movie. After that, take a moment to imagine what a Left 4 Dead version of the movie might have been like. Or don't. Doing so might only serve to make you as disappointed as I am.
In the Reddit thread, Goddard confirms that a couple of monsters seen in the underground cubes were actually from Left 4 Dead 2 as, before MGM went bankrupt and sunk the project, Valve was working with the studio to produce the DLC crossover for their hugely successful first-person shooter. Goddard goes on to say that the content was going to have players explore both the titular cabin in the woods location, as well as the underground facility that eventually becomes overrun with nightmare creatures. Just thinking about it makes my trigger finger itch and my internal CitW fanboy squeal with glee.
Alas, it was not meant to be.
