Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Trailer Battles Metal Gear Ray

Raiden's first encounter with a Metal Gear in MGR: Revengeance is a soul shattering affair...for gamers. The battle sees Raiden having to pick apart Metal Gear Ray in a tactical battle that is as over-the-top as it is thrilling, featuring the iconic moment where Raiden lifts Ray into the air and throws him the good distance of an entire city block while running up its bladed arm and cutting it to pieces.

The fight is from the very first footage that we saw of Metal Gear Rising when the game originally debuted. And even though Hideo Kojima was no fan (and probably still isn't) of Raiden dead-lifting Metal Gear Ray into the air and throwing him and far enough to run up one of its appendages, one must appreciate the absolute spectacular and entertaining qualities that Platinum Games brings to the table with their offerings. Check it out below.

One thing that I really, really, really like about this is the cut-everything-to-pieces feature. I still haven't figured it out. I mean, usually in most games you can figure out the design process. You know that QTEs are arbitrary animations where if you fail it's just game over and if you “succeed” it just continues playing out the designated animation. We know that those blockbuster moments in games like Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty are attached to predefined, scripted set pieces so you're basically playing a “Hollywood moment” that will stay the same no matter how many times you play it over and over again.

However, what we have here with this “cut everything to pieces” feature I have no idea how Platinum Games and Kojima Productions managed to make this possible in such a short amount of time. It almost seems like procedural object deconstruction, but I still have no idea how they managed to make it possible for so many different objects in the game without spending five years developing the technology. That my friends, is the sign of a real game design team exercising exemplary design technique. Very impressive.

You can look for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to launch in early 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
