It’s been a long, hard road to release for Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile and, come Jan. 23, the highly anticipated free-to-play action roleplaying game will move one step closer to that final milestone with the launch of an open beta.
After five years in development and partially thanks to the very literal support of a rabid fanbase (raising more than $1.8 million in crowd-funding), Path of Exile is nearly ready to finally be unleashed upon the masses. Once the open beta goes live, a third and final testing section will be added to the mix, allowing players to explore the abandoned regions of Sarn while swiping loot, upgrading gear and hacking through hordes of enemies.
An online action game for PC, Path of Exile will be supported by “ethical microtransactions,” according to the developers, meaning players may pay to enhance their play experience, but not “pay-to-win.” Six character classes will be available at launch in a game where the player has been banished for their misdeeds within the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. You’ll be able to explore the world with friends, take on missions, battle hundreds of enemy types, grab loot, utilize artifacts and unleash loads of spells.
“We’re excited to have reached the point where we can finally throw open the doors and invite everyone in,” said producer Chris Wilson. “We have one of the best and most supportive communities on the internet and their input has been invaluable in making Path of Exile what it is. We hope they’ll be delighted with all the new content.”
For additional details and to sign up for the Jan. 23 open beta launch, head on over to the Path of Exile official website. Once the beta goes live, no more character wipes will take place. So whatever you do in this final beta will carry over into the final launch. Happy questing!
