Nov. 19 is a big day for the PlayStation Vita, marking the release of firmware update v2.00 and the official introduction of the PS Vita PlayStation Plus program, offering all of the perks of its home console counterpart, as well as its own “Instant Game Collection” including five titles.
When the PlayStation Store updates next Tuesday, Vita users will have access to PlayStation Plus within the portable console’s online store. A three month ($17.99) and one year ($49.99) subscription plan will be available. If you already subscribe to Plus on your PS3, however, you’ll gain all of the Vita benefits at no additional charge. Said benefits include online storage for game saves, automatic updates and Trophy Syncing and, of course, access to an Instant Game Collection. The games are yours to keep so long as you remain a Plus subscriber.
The initial Vita collection is something of a doozy, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, Wipeout 2048, Jet Set Radio HD, and Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!. That’s nearly $150 worth of games on a roster that will continue to rotate in new titles on a regular basis. SCEA Director of Product Planning and Platform Software Innovation Don Mesa and Product Manager of Digital Platforms Strategic Planning Ray Bautista went so far as to post a video showing off Plus and its Vita games over on the PlayStation Blog.
As for the v2.00 update, the Vita will become even more useful next Tuesday with the inclusion of an email app, enhancements to the web browser and the ability to transfer content wirelessly between the Vita and PC.
If you’ve been waiting for the right time to pick up a Vita, this just might be it.
