Obsidian Entertainment, developer of Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, finally announced that game they've been teasing. Project Eternity is an isometric, party-based PC RPG set in all-new fantasy setting.
"Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment," Obsidian said on the game's new Kickstarter page.
That claim isn't as outrageous as you think. Obsidian was founded by key members of Black Isle Studios, the company that made Icewind and Planescape in addition to the two Fallout games. They also helped BioWare develop Baldur's Gate. This company really knows how to make isometric PC RPG's, in other words.
Eternity's gameplay sounds similar to the Dungeons & Dragons games mentioned above. Combat plays out in real-time, but can be paused to queue up actions. Players will create a custom character and then recruit companions with unique personalities along the way. The dialogue, and story in general, continually offer choices with important consequences.
Obsidian is hoping to raise $1.1 million through Kickstarter. They've already gotten nearly a quarter million just this morning so they're well on their way. Any funds they get above their goal will go toward adding additional features, characters, quests and locations. The rewards for donating include t-shirts, a digital soundtrack, an in-game item, and more. The estimated delivery for these rewards is April 2014, apparently the preliminary release window for the game.
