If you were wondering how a large, supposedly “next-gen” FPS like RAGE would run on the Xbox 360, well id Software has given a bit of a clue and it goes something like three DVDs or a 22GB install. PS3 owners won’t be escaping off the hook either, there’s still a mandatory 8GB install required to play the game.

According to an article on Joystiq, id Software confirmed the multiple DVDs required to play RAGE on the Xbox 360. This news follows suit of other big-name games like Battlefield 3 also arriving on multiple DVDs.

The good news is that id Software has also stated that once gamers finish playing through the first disc there won’t be a need to return to it thereafter, so the disc swapping will not be a constant factor when playing the game. The third DVD will be for the multiplayer, so you’re only going to need it when you plan to go online and do some competitive PvP. Alternatively, if you have enough space, you can just install all 22GB of the three DVDs onto your hard disk, old-school PC style.

A few gamers were questioning how the open-world would work if the game is linear enough to progressively transition from one DVD to the next. However, the disc swapping could potentially be related to dialogue and cinematics rather than actual game content. At least, I hope so.

As mentioned, though, PS3 gamers won’t be getting off entirely easy. There is still a required 8GB installation required but that only happens once and then after that, you can enjoy the game from noonday to midnight without worrying about swapping discs or additional installations.
