Shooting is always more fun when your buddies are involved. That’s the motto the folks at Tragnarion Studios are operating under, at least, which is why upcoming PlayStation Network third-person shooter, Scourge: Outbreak, has such a strong focus on four-player co-op.
There is of course the ability to play Scourge in single player but, according to a PlayStation Blog post from Lead Designer Omar Salleh, co-op is where the game’s story really gets a chance to shine. According to Salleh, the game’s storyline unfolds as a series of flashbacks specific to your chosen player. Since you’re only getting a fraction of the story, one that apparently makes you question the motives of your fellow soldiers, part of the fun is talking with your co-op partners, comparing experiences and deciding what to (or not to) share. As for the gameplay itself, Salleh said that Scourge will offer players something a little bit different than what they might be used to. “Scourge: Outbreak is often compared to other well-established third-person shooters, but we’ve tried to capture a faster-paced, less methodical combat feel than what typifies other examples of the genre,” Salleh said. “Echo Squad’s four members are not simply re-skinned carbon copies of each other. Each boasts different special abilities, as well as different stats that affect weapon handling.” Along with the single and co-op campaigns, Scourge: Outbreak will also feature all the usual multiplayer versus options for those who like to shoot AT their friends rather than WITH them. No price point has been announced, and nothing more concrete than “a couple of months’ time” has been given for a release date, so don’t worry about marking your calendar just yet, unless you want to just circle September and October in their entirety.
