The Secret World Pre-Launch Access Starts Right Now

For those of you who pre-ordered The Secret World, you currently have access to the game's pre-launch opening. This means that before the servers get crowded and gamers flood into the game, you can create your character, explore the game world and get a grip on things before everyone else.

Funcom SVP of Sales and Marketing, Morten Larssen commented in the press release, saying...

“To say that we are shaking things up is an understatement,”... “With ‘The Secret World’ we are showing gamers as well as the gaming industry that MMOs can be taken into new, exciting directions and that innovation in this genre is definitely not dead. Judging from the fantastic feedback we have already received from hundreds of thousands of beta testers, innovation is clearly the way forward and Funcom is excited to be breaking new ground."

In terms of innovation and creativity, Larssen is talking about the ability to build up your character in any way that you see fit. You can finally mix and match the ability to be a swordsman and a sniper all at once. Perhaps you might also want to become a flame-spouting, shotgun touting, psychic badarse? Well, that's completely possible with The Secret World.

In addition to the free-form leveling the game also sees players venturing around the world to places like Egypt, New York, Transylvania and London to name a few. In each location there are mythic beasts, monsters and supernatural entities to face off against along with massive boss battle encounters.

The Secret World still has some drawbacks, as many players mentioned that the game is somewhat linear in its approach to gameplay and that outside of character customization there isn't a lot of innovation. I haven't played it so I can't say.

Still, if a modern-day, supernatural thriller is what you've been looking for in an MMO, The Secret World aims to fill that void, just don't expect any groundbreaking storytelling involving folks like Castiel, Crowley or Sam and Dean.
