The Secret World: Scorched Desert Trailer

Funcom released a new trailer for their upcoming MMORP action game, The Secret World. The new trailer takes gamers through the scorching desert of Egypt as battles rage onward to prevent mummies, zombies and giant bugs from taking over.

The trailer is a story-oriented affair, giving players a little bit of the background and details on the mission structures of Egypt. Basically, it's up to players to go in and clean house. That's it.

I'm a little torn because The Secret World looks like it has potential but at the same time it also looks like it could be a heavy, mind-numbingly boring grind fest. It all boils down to the action and the combat mechanics. For instance, I've yet to see any of the characters reload in the videos, and if there is no reloading and no ammo count then that basically means you'll just stand there holding down the action button until something dies (i.e., Champions Online, DC Universe Online).

If the combat mechanics are slightly more realistic and scavenge-oriented like Fallen Earth, Anarchy Online or maybe even APB: Reloaded, with ammo counts, reloading and weapon degradation, then I could see the game having longer lasting appeal.

It's hard to tell right now from the videos but I'm hoping it has a nice, robust, micromanagement system without the hand-holding RPG mechanics found on most newer console games.

You can look for The Secret World to land on retail shelves and become available digitally early in 2012. For further information on the game be sure to visit the Official Website.
