Severity Canceled - Wait, NoAuthor: Pete Haas

Anyone remember Doom creator John Romero announcing a first-person shooter called Severity at the end of 2006? Well, game journos do, if only because it enabled us to recycle jokes about Romero's last shooter, the ill-fated flop Daikatana. If you don't remember hearing about the game, though, don't worry: it's been killed.
The game was being developed for competitive use by the Cyberathlete Professional League but when the CPL went belly up this March, we had a feeling Severity would be canceled too. Tom Mustaine, head of developer Escalation Studios, told ESR at the time that "We've been extremely busy working on our Wii projects, but, Severity is still very much a real property and in development. We'll be ready to talk about it in the near future." Well, no talking happened so it fell to Romero to deliver the killing blow. Said Romero to TGS today: "Yeah, the game was cancelled a while ago. I’m never going to announce a game that i’m not actually working on again. Sorry!" That's right, Romero wasn't even involved in the development; he was just on the advisory board for CPL and was given the honor of announcing the game. Guess the Daikatana jokes will just have to wait 'til his real next project emerges. Update: Romero contacted TGS by Mustaine and others, who state that the game is still being worked on. In addition to not announcing games he's not working on, Romero probably shouldn't state their cancellation, either. |
