We don't get submarine games very often, in fact we don't get submarine games in mainstream circles at all. I can't really remember the last AAA sub game made by a major player since...well...since Sierra Interactive was a major player. Anyway, Ubisoft is bringing the sub genre back to the mainstream circles with their upcoming free-to-play title Silent Hunter Online.
A very brief and very to-the-point teaser trailer was released for the game at this year's GamesCom, showcasing a brief clip of what's possible in Silent Hunter Online, a sort of pseudo-remake of the classic Silent Hunter game from Aeon Electronic Entertainment way back in the 90s. You can check out the teaser trailer, which contains no gameplay whatsoever. I very vaguely remember the Silent Hunter series but it was always part of a niche sub-genre of simulators that, as mentioned, was usually dominated by Sierra. Eidos also had similar games like Flying Nightmares and of course Electronic Arts had their hand in quite a few simulation sub-genres, their most popular probably being Jane's Flight Simulation. But submarine games were a rare breed. Ubisoft released a budget-priced Silent Hunter game back in 2010 but it came and went with practically zero fanfare and it was highly overshadowed by Eidos' Battlestations games. With many of the major players getting involved with free-to-play titles, it's not surprising that Ubisoft will aim to cash in on the sub-genre the way the tank-genre has seen massive success thanks to games like World of Tanks. I'm curious if the game will be sub-only or if players will be able to take command of carriers, frigates and battleships as well? There's not a lot of info on the game but you can check out the website and sign-up for the closed beta at the official Silent Hunter Online website. Back to top
