Single-Player Experiences Have To Go Away, Says Crytek

“Boo to single-player”, “Single-player is evil”, “No more single-player”. That's pretty much the common theme circulating around a lot of top tier studios in the video game industry right now. Taking the offline, single-player experience away from gamers is somehow a good thing, and Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli believes that the notion of the single-player experience has to go away.
In a lengthy piece by IGN [via Destructoid], complete with an exclusive promo video, Yerli states that...
“I think the notion of a single-player experience has to go away,” … “However, I’m not saying that there will be no single-player experiences ... it could be it’s called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead.”
Oh, Mr. Yerli...you mean to say that we need more Diablo 3 scenarios? Perhaps he's referring to the newest SimCity?
The main problem is that I don't understand this whole Big Brother approach to single-player games. Does forcing consumers to “stay connected” really benefit them? And how?
I always imagine that people who want to play multiplayer games will play a multiplayer game, and people who want to play alone, offline, should be able to play alone and offline.
Coupling this frame of thinking with Cliffy B's pro-corporate, Gordon Gekko's “greed is good” rant, I imagine most gamers who would just rather play a good game will probably have to bypass all AAA titles and stick with the indie scene.
Yerli's comments are in relation to Crytek's promotion of their free-to-play FPS, Warface. It's one of the many microtransaction games coming out from AAA publishers trying to cash-in on the freemium model. You can check out the entire article over at IGN.
