Square Enix, just ahead of the game's launch tomorrow and following on the heels of the game's explosively cool launch trailer, has announced that the open-world action game set in the gritty urban jungle of Hong Kong will receive six-months worth of DLC that is currently in development right now.
The DLC will include a number of nifty new items to keep players both engaged and entertained, which means that content packs will range from clothes and cars, to missions and side-quests. I'm hoping these DLC packs will be adequately priced so we don't end up with free-to-play cash shop prices for a full retail game. Lee Singleton, General Manager, Square Enix London Studios commented about the DLC campaign, saying... “SLEEPING DOGS is a game we know fans will want to keep on playing, so over the next six months we’ll be creating a series of new content packs giving players everything they need to keep enjoying the game,” ...“We want to create something to suit everyone’s play style from cool cars and high-speed missions to outlandish outfits and game-extending mission packs. The game launch is just the beginning.” There's a ton of positive praise for the game so far, and it's still baffling to me how Activision decided to bail on this game when it looks like a ton of fun. The open-world antics come across as both engaging and atmospheric, two things that are essential for making players feel immersed in the world as well as pegging them to stay immersed. One of the biggest problems with a lot of open-world titles is that the worlds don't feel very interactive, but it looks like Sleeping Dogs may have managed this feat, so everything else is icing on the cake...well, assuming the rest of the ingredients for the cake include melee combat, stable vehicular controls, decent graphics and polished gunplay. But yeah, otherwise the rest is just icing on the cake. You can look for Sleeping Dogs to launch tomorrow for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in North America and you can expect to see the game on store shelves in the UK this Friday on August 17th.
