Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time Introduces New Character, Altered Reality

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time won’t be hitting the PlayStation 3 and Vita until early next year but, at Gamescom this week, the development team at Sanzaru have released a brand new trailer showing off a new character, new abilities and several cross-play features that unite the console and handheld versions of the game in interesting ways.

Sanzaru President Glen Egan outlined all of the info in a recent PlayStation Blog post, starting with a reveal for one of Sly’s ancestors we’ll be visiting in Thieves in Time, Salim Al Kupar of Arabia.

Sly and Co. need to convince Salim to stay out of retirement for just a bit longer, utilizing his Cobra Climb ability and magic carpet to get around.

Also on offer were additional details about how the PS3 and Vita versions of Thieves in Time will work in tangent.

“We’ve already talked about the cross-save feature, which will use cloud saving to transfer your game from one device to the other,” Egan said. “Here at Gamescom, we’re showcasing some pretty cool Augmented Reality features using the PS Vita system to help you collect some valuable items as you play through the PS3 version of the game.”

For starters, while exploring a level on your PS3, a second player can use the Vita to X-ray the area you’re in and, by touching a hidden item on the Vita screen, send a notification marker to your television to lead the way to the loot. Priceless pieces of art and tapestries are also spread across the Thieves in Time universe. Using the Vita as a camera, you can take a picture of these bits of art on the television screen to collect some additional money.

Taking full advantage of these features will require two copies of the game, of course, which is why it’s even better news that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is part of the new Sony cross-buy promotion. Buying the game for your PS3 will earn you a code to download it on your Vita for free. Look to take advantage of that deal when the game releases, which is currently set for some time in February 2013.
