Song Sells Better On Rock Band Than iTunes

Remember how Motley Crue was debuting their new single on Rock Band last month? Well, it's sold more copies on Rock Band than traditional digital song services - a lot, lot more.

As of this weekend, "Saints of Los Angeles" has sold 47,000 copies as a downloadable song for Rock Band for Xbox 360. The song sold 10,000 copies over iTunes, Amazon and other digital services.

No figures were available for PS3 Rock Band sales but the fact that the song sold at least five times better as video game track than a normal MP3 is pretty amazing. You can't transfer the Rock Band song to an MP3 player or a computer so the message here is that a substantial amount of people, if given the choice, would rather play a song through a video game than just listen to it.

I don't know what the sales expectations are for an aging rock band like Motley Crue and whether they're pleased enough with the sales figures to appreciate the proportion that came through Rock Band. Other bands will likely take notice though and we should see more new singles released simultaneously on Rock Band and digital song services in the future.
