Sony Makes It Hard For Indie Devs To Prosper On PS3Author: William Usher

Call it a harsh headline but here at Blend Games we’re not the ones preventing or inhibiting independent developers from prospering in the industry. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just know that recently Microids sent out a press release regarding a game that could be on the PS3, but probably won’t and it’s all because of Sony.
Emmanuel Olivier, President of Microïds, recently sent out a press release asking for gaming journalists and fans to help to convince Sony to lower their financial manufacturing measures for games such as Syberia 3, which may not end up on the PS3 due to exorbitant costs. This has been a problem all along, although I’m just shocked that an independent developer has finally gone public about it. While Sony fanboys may huddle in forum boards and post on comment sections about how they could do without games like Syberia 3, Section 8, BattleStations: Pacific and a host of other third-party games, the reality is that the industry sort of needs these titles to span the likes of the multi-platform spectrum. This rings especially true for an independent developer trying to capitalize on returns from their developmental investment. I’m not really sure why Sony has made it so difficult for independent developers and publishers to get smaller, non-PSN titles published for the PS3 – when it’s not a direct inflection for the prowess of the PlayStation 3’s capabilities – but it’s starting to create a huge gap in the software availability between the three big consoles. Now this is not to say that the company shouldn’t be applauded for lowering the cost of the dev kits, which allows for more studios to have a less financially burdening hurdle to cross for the actual development of PS3 titles and ports. Nevertheless, companies still aren’t exempt from Sony’s bloated royalties hampering the progress and proliferation of ports (and some original titles) appearing on the PlayStation 3 or making the transition from the PlayStation 2. If you’re the kind of gamer who doesn’t make excuses for why a console isn’t receiving more games and a larger variety of different games, then feel free to support Microids in convincing Sony to change their ways and open more doors for independent games appearing on the PS3.
