LucasArts is about to re-release the Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic series to stores. Amazon is now listing a bundle pack for the two single-player role-playing games. It's only weeks from release, too.
Both games put players into the role of a Jedi in training. They can embrace the light or dark side of the Force, each with its own set of unique abilities, by making moral decisions throughout the story. Throughout their adventure, they'll also recruit companions that they can persuade to be more good or evil.
The combat is similar to Dragon Age or Baldur's Gate. You can coordinate your party's actions in real-time or pause to queue up abilities. The rules are based on the D20 Star Wars Role-playing Game from Wizards of the Coast, so it's very close to Dungeons and Dragons. The KOTOR series' combination of strategic combat and thoughtful story-telling should be instantly familiar to any fans of BioWare's other work.
The second KOTOR was actually handled by Obsidian Entertainment, the studio responsible for Fallout: New Vegas and Neverwinter Nights 2. The switch in developers didn't result in a drop-off in quality, though. If anything, the story's actually better in the second game; it really probes the question, "What does it mean to be a Jedi?" The only reservation I have about KOTOR2 is the rushed, somewhat incomplete ending. It's a black eye on an otherwise stellar experience.
Amazon's listing says that the Bundle Pack will cost $19.99 and will be available starting July 17th. It's worth noting that LucasArts hasn't formally announced this re-release, though, so some details might not be entirely accurate.
