The eSports arena continues to gain steam and proliferate the market value of the eSports ring, bringing professional gamers into a more celebrity-filled light and basking them in the glory of their finger-skills. This weekend Red Bull engaged their Training Grounds that pits the best of the StarCraft II players against each other with a total of $6,400 on the line.
As noted in the press alert...
The eight invited players will be split into two groups of four. The players in each group will play each other in a round-robin format, with each player going head-to-head in a Bo3 with every competitor in their group. Players will receive $100 for every game won.
Greats from previous StarCraft II tournaments have been invited by Red Bull to participate in the event, as they attempt to overthrow Mountain Dew as the official gamer fuel of the Doritocracy. Winning over favor from the StarCraft community and Blizzard fanboys and fangirls alike is a great way to get started.
So who all will be participating in the event? Well, only a few of the best players from around the world, including Jens "Snute" Aasgaard, Ryan "State" Visbeck, Chris "HuK" Loranger, Chris "Illusion" Lee, Dario "TLO" WŁnsch, JLim "NesTea" Jae Duk, Ryoo "SeleCT" Kyung Hyun and Dennis "Succeed" Schmuck
With a name like Schmuck it's amazing he's amounted to anything in life... even if only competing for a couple of thousand dollars in a popular strategy game.
Anyway, the two players with the highest score will eventually advance to the grand finale where they will compete for $3,200. Additionally, competitors will earn $100 for each game they win leading up to the finals, so there's a lot of incentive there to not only do well but to win as many games as possible.
The matches are already underway and we're kind of late to the party, but you can still get in on the live-streams and watch the matches with the embed above. The commentators provide a great sense of immersion despite the fact that most newbies to StarCraft will have zero clue what they're talking about or the terms they're using. Sorry, this page is running out of space for a short lexicon of the lingo.
Anyway, you can also learn more about the Red Bull invitationals and their support for the eSport community by paying a visit to the official Red Bull eSports page.
