The Creative Assembly released the first in-game footage from Total War: Rome 2 today. It shows a massive battle between Carthage and the legions of Rome.

The footage shown is actually based on historical events. Rome had the African state of Carthage under siege for three years. Eventually Scipio Aemilianus broke through Carthage's defenses and ended the war with an amphibious assault.

The scale of the Total War series' battles has always been impressive. Rome 2 goes one step further by adding an extreme level of detail. You can zoom into the action and see the actions of each individual soldier. You can even see their facial expressions.

Rome 2 is due next year on the PC.
