Unreported SimCity Bugs Can Get You Banned From Your Origin Account
I've been torn on this upcoming SimCity. I like the look, the feel and the concept of the city construction simulator, but then there are blatantly ignorant business choices that even a three-legged poodle with Alzheimer's would think is a bad idea, such as banning gamers from their entire Origin account for not reporting bugs or glitches in a beta.
Blues was tipped off to the clause via SideQuesting, which relates to the terms of service for the SimCity beta, which recently received an 11 minute tutorial video to help get gamers amped up for the city-simulation experience.
So what does the clause state? Read it and weep.
“It is understood and agreed that, as part of your participation in the Beta Program, it is your responsibility to report all known bugs, abuse of ‘bugs’, ‘undocumented features’ or other defects and problems related to the Game and Beta Software to EA as soon as they are found (“Bugs”). If you know about a Bug or have heard about a Bug and fail to report the Bug to EA, we reserve the right to treat you no differently from someone who abuses the Bug. You acknowledge that EA reserve the right to lock anyone caught abusing a Bug out of all EA products.”
I can't believe people still use that service.
Anyway, this is in addition to the game's already unwelcoming and unflattering use of always-on DRM, which is bound to ruffle some feathers on launch day when people find they can't log into the game due to crowded servers, etc.
The lockout on using “all EA products” is so much bull, though. I mean, basically they're saying that your Origin account is ALWAYS under ransom to their terms and conditions. You don't hop when they say “hop”, you lose access. You don't bend over for your online pass wallet raping, you lose access. You don't report bugs, you lose access. You don't kiss John Riccitiello's feet, you lose access. Using Origin is like living in an alternate reality where Dick Cheney is president of the world.
Anyway, if you don't mind all the ransom staking on your Origin account and games and you don't mind always-on DRM, don't mind Origin's spyware and you don't mind the 2012's worst company in America taking a piss on your face, then feel free to sign-up and join the SimCity beta.
Those of you want to read the full terms of service before signing up can do so over at SideQuesting, considering that you can't read it otherwise unless you register with Origin and sign-up for the SimCity beta.
