2K Games and Fireaxis upcoming XCOM: Enemy Unknown boasts a nice little multiplayer mode for gamers who like challenging their combative strategic skills against opponents who don't have chips and bits for brains. To show off a little bit of the multiplayer, 2K released some screenshots for XCOM's multiplayer at this year's GamesCom.
The game's multiplayer mode will enable gamers to go head-to-head using a mix of soldiers or aliens and mix-and-match armor, weapons and items in some intense six-on-six versus mode combat. As detailed in the press release...
For the first time in an XCOM game, players can pick a squad of soldiers, aliens, or a mix of both in a unique multiplayer game mode to go head-to-head against another player in an intense one-on-one, turn-based deathmatch.
Remember way back in the day in order to do multiplayer gamers would have to e-mail each other back and forth the coordinates and save-game files to do multiplayer in X-Com games? Man, that was crazy. Multiplayer has come a long way since then. Most games these days now have multiplayer mods forcibly added in via community tweaking.
Many gamers are hoping that for the PC version there may be a way to mod-in or tweak the amount of soldiers who can occupy a battlefield at a time. In other words, hopefully modders can expand the soldier cap from six soldiers to maybe 20, just like in the old X-Com games. It would be pretty epic having a massive shootout in a destructible environment with 20 aliens and 20 soldiers, especially if there are a ton of rocket-wielding grunts on the ground.
You can check out the new XCOM: Enemy Unknown screenshots below. The game is scheduled to release on October 9th this fall for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. You can learn more about the game by paying a visit to the Official Website.
