MOST MISLEADING MOVIE TRAILER: Highlander:Endgame - Any trailer which contains scenes that don't ever actually appear in the film automatically earns a nomination here. Highlander: Endgame's trailer features a scene in which the villain is cut down the middle and splits into two people. A very cool scene and one that had many running to theaters just for that. Guess what.... it was never used in the film and we were the losers. Mission Impossible 2 - From the trailer you might think that Mission Impossible 2 is a very good film. It is not. Nuff said.
HAIR OF THE YEAR: X-Men (Rogue) - Gotta love that cool white streak Unbreakable (Samuel L. Jackson) - Damn that's some weird hair. What do you call that, a square half fro???? The Grinch (Jim Carrey) - Its hard to compete with green Alfalfa hair. The Grinch makeup artists got it just right. X-Men (Wolverine) - Who would ever have thought anyone could get Wolverine's feral looking hair took look good in real life? Not bad bub.
WORST SPECIAL EFFECTS: Battlefield Earth - Can you say CHEESE? Battlefield struggles to be the Matrix, and instead ends up being the 6 Million Dollar Man. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Its bad enough that the characters are flying around in the first place, but if you are going to add in miscellaneous and pointless floating and flying maneuvers, at least try to make it look real. Though you couldn't actually see the wire, you didn't need to to know that the characters are being hauled around by a rope stuck to their ass.
Cast Away - Scraggly, dirty, rotten, Tom Hanks beard not only looks natural, but is successful in appearing as if it has been trapped on an Island alone with Tom Hanks for four years. Great beard work, but I don't envy it its task. Battlefield Earth - John Travolta's dread lock beard gets points for creativity, and does a great job of fitting in well with the rest of the film. Like everything else in Battlefield Earth, John Travolta's beard is cheesy and overdone. Finding Forrester - The classic Sean Connery beard is a beauty wherever it goes. For this film, it became a little less classy and a little more scraggly, to successfully give Connery the look of an old fart who never leaves his apartment.
Autumn In New York - Young Hottie falls in love with rich older man.... come on, how realistic is this? Wait... never mind, that is the Richard Gere Autobiography. Chicken Run - Suave American chicken falls for overweight annoying British chicken.... need I say more? Mission Impossible 2 - Hero finds girl trying to rob someone, hero and girl almost run each other off the road. Fall instantly in love. Kill me now.
Mission To Mars - Not since the early 70's have we seen such corny aliens. Yeah, the ending was really bad, so bad it was almost funny. MI:2 - Oh come on, the whole film was a big stupid farce. Personally I lost it when the glowing dove flew through the fire ahead of Tom Cruise to herald his coming. Either you laugh or you cry. Battlefield Earth - Everything about this movie is bad... REALLY bad. So bad that its some of the most fun I've ever had heckling at a movie in my life. Go with your friends, you'll have a great laugh.
MOST UNNEEDED SEQUEL: Mission Impossible 2 - The first film was great. Smart, well written, a tribute to the original Mission Impossible series. The second film tried to be James Bond, and failed miserably. Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps - Hey, what if we make a whole movie about a family of fat people where Eddie plays all of them? One was nice, there was no reason on god's green earth to do another. Its not like there was some great story left just BURNING to be told. An entire film about Grandma Klumps sex life? Thanks, but no.
MOVIE TRAILER OF THE YEAR: Unbreakable - A trailer that says everything and tells us nothing. Enough to get you interested without really giving away ANY of the plot. All you know is that there was a train wreck, one man survived. You are left wondering, what is this film? Is he some sort of super hero? It is a movie about a man coping with survivor guilt? Left with burning questions, audiences had no choice but to seek the film out to get answers. X-Men - A typical high energy, high excitement type trailer. Slick, glossy and well done. A few quick glimpses of what the X-Men can do and a quick introduction into who or what they are. Cast Away - Another mystery trailer in which the audience is hooked without revealing any of the plot. Like Unbreakable, Cast Away's trailer leaves you only with questions. We know that at some point the film will be about a man trapped alone on an island but other than that, all we are left with is suspicions.... and lots of questions. Good hook.
UNDULY OVERLOOKED AWARD: The Emperor's New Groove - Sure its a Disney cartoon, but its a damn funny one. Probably one of the funniest movies of the year, put together from the ashes of a failed attempt at a serious movie but carried by the strong shoulders of an amazingly funny cast. The Legend of Drunken Master - And older Jackie Chan movie gets its first release in the USA with a case of bad dubbing. But the fight scenes are flat out amazing. Never before has such an incredible blend of skill, choreography, and speed been captured on celluloid. Not to be missed by action and martial arts fans.
FILM OF THE YEAR: X-MEN - One of the greatest comic books of all time is, against all odds, successfully translated to the big screen and into instant success. Despite complaints and concerns about bad costumes and liberties with established story lines, X-Men turns out to be a truly great film. A lot of credit goes to a great group of actors who took a care in making certain they did justice to their characters. Unbreakable - Deep, insightful, exciting, intense, this is Unbreakable. A film about questions, a film about a quest for understanding, a film about surprises and the unkown. Takes the comic book super hero and brings him into the real world... with resounding results. Remember the Titans - A football movie with appeal to anyone. Strongly character driven and highly emotional, Titans sucks you in to the lives of this struggling team and lets you walk around in their heads for awhile. A deep and meaningful character drama that doesn't let itself get caught up in the trappings of its own arrogance.
