| Who
cares about History
Am I the only person that doesn't give a rat's ass whether or not Pearl Harbor is historically accurate? Don't get me wrong, my dislike for the film itself is no secret, but what does being historically accurate have to do with it? I only bring this up because it seems like everywhere I look people are complaining about how historically inaccurate Pearl Harbor is. Why does that matter? Do people actually expect to go to theater and be educated? Does anyone actually think that the purpose of a movie is anything other than to entertain its audience? Historical accuracy is what they make documentaries for, if not, why else would we bother with them? I for one don't want my movies historically accurate. When I want historical accuracy I'll pick up a book (or for the illiterate among us, watch the History Channel). If you're going to make a movie, use history as a base, then make the damn thing as interesting as possible. I'm not stupid, I know that what I see in a movie is not the gospel truth... its a friggin movie for god's sake! The only individuals who believe everything they see in movies are the same people read the National Enquirer, and there's no hope for those people anyway, so why bother with them. Keep em ignorant and happy and leave reality to those of us smart enough to handle it. Let's be honest here, if we're relying on Hollywood to educate the public, we have a lot worse things to worry about than the historical accuracy of a few summer blockbusters. Protecting the stupid is not California's job. That's what they have those short busses for and why we invented the term "mentally challenged". Sure, stupid people deserve to learn the truth as much as anyone else, but I for one am not interested in using films to teach them. And don't start with me about it being disrespectful to the actual participants of the event. Michael Bay throwing a PARTY on the graves of American sailors is disrespectful. Making a movie, however bad it might be, is not. When a movie is based
on a novel, we all can understand and accept that there will be differences
between the film and the book, and that no film can totally duplicate
everything done in the book. Why should films based on historical events
be any different?
