| Stupidity
comes in pairs
So last night the Hobbit is partying. Getting down with his groove thing and all that.... well actually perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the Hobbit was AT a party where people were getting down with their groove thing. The Hobbit was actually, as usual, sitting in the corner in deep discussion with various passerby's. Its not that the Hobbit doesn't like to groove, quite often he does, but his groove lacks rhythm and his dancing lacks style and most greatly resembles an angry hen dancing a jig around the chicken coop. Engaged in deep delving conversation, things turned to film, and the Hobbit heard things which he found quite shocking. "You MUST see Cast Away, its a Blockbuster," said one person to another. Its at this moment that your friendly neighborhood Hobbit jumped in, "Wait, why would he have to see a film just because its a blockbuster?" The answer? "Because its a blockbuster man, that means it represents something!" Represents what you might ask? This same question burned brightly in the mind of the Hobbit, however there was no answer. It seems that some people have gotten the idea that simply because a film makes a lot of money, this automatically means its a great film. How could anything be further from the truth? It represents something? What a load of crap! The only think making a lot of money represents is great marketing and slick stars. Quite often high grossing movies are in fact very good, else wise why would so many go see them? But often they are also very very bad. Its easy to suck tons of people into theaters to see just about anything if you package it right. Somewhere along the way, there is a nice sized group of slack-jawed yokels who have gotten the idea that big bucks = high quality. I'm sure Hollywood would be happy to hear their plans are working, but the Hobbit is not. Yet, the night was young, and the party progressed. The Hobbit continued to sip his somewhat watery Margarita, attempting to bop his head to the rhythm, but succeeding in only banging his head into the wall behind. An acquaintance approaches and launches into discussion. The Hobbit complains about the psuedo-human who had been here before raving on about Blockbusters. The friend agrees, and proceeds to disclose that he refuses to go see any big name movie and that they are all crap made to suck in those of lower intelligence. Again, your friend the Hobbit is blown away by the stupidity of this man before him. Hobbit attempts to explain to him that it is the height of arrogance to assume a film is not good just because a lot of people go to see it. To assume you are smarter than everyone else, and that to be cool you must avoid anything that is popular is a bunch of smarmy, stuck up hooey. Its sickening to see these little film clicks running around, with people just like this guy, claiming they know more than everyone else, and that you must be stupid for "following the crowd". The truth is, that good film can and does happen anywhere. Whether it stars Tom Hanks, or Benicio Del Toro, its not how many people see it, or how much money it makes that matters, its all about whether you personally enjoy it. Anyone who bases their opinion on a movie on how many other people see it, whatever end of the spectrum they may be on, is a fool. It is not "cool" to sit around and rave about independent flicks. No, it does NOT make you smart to be able to sit around and talk about obscure movies no one else has ever heard of or ever had any interest in seeing. Nor is a film automatically good just because it grossed a 100 million dollars, or because Brittany Spears is in it. Make your OWN opinions! Have a brain.... or at least pretend you do. And don't look down on other people just because they like things you don't.... lest the Film Hobbit punish you for your arrogance. And now, back to bed, to get rid of this horrendous hangover.... perhaps those Margarita's weren't so watered down after all. You've endured the Hobbit's
madness, tell him what you think! CLICK HERE |
