Alicia Keys leads the pack in the nominations for the 2008 American Music Awards. The nominations were announced on Tuesday by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who will also host the Awards show when it is broadcast November 23 live on ABC. Joining Kimmel for the announcement were Jesse McCartney and Julianne Hough.
Keys was nominated in five categories including album of the year (for As I Am), and favorite female vocalist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. Keys was also nominated for the top award, artist of the year. In that category she will compete against Coldplay, The Eagles, Chris Brown and Lil’ Wayne. Coldplay and the Eagles picked up four nominations each, while Brown and Lil’ Wayne each received three.
The American Music Awards show, produced each year by Dick Clark, is traditionally a big ratings getter for ABC. Because the awards are based more on things like record sales than the Grammys, they are often viewed as more of a popularity contest. Even so, the annual show is often seen as a preview of what to expect at the more prestigious Grammy Awards, and nearly always draws good ratings for the network. This year’s broadcast will feature performances by Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Taylor Swift and the Pussycat Dolls.
