'Pop Idol' Winner To Star In Discotivity Show

published: 2007-06-30 10:06:38
Before 'American Idol' (yes, such a time existed) there was 'Pop Idol,' the British singing TV show that launched in 2001. It looks like the second season winner, Michelle McManus, has landed an unusual stage role: Mary in Discotivity, a disco version of the Nativity Story.

You read that correctly.

According to Dotmusic, the 27-year-old Scottish singer will star in the play, which sets the birth of Jesus to, of all things, disco tunes. Sort of like Saturday Night Fever shakin' hips and boogieing down with the disciples.

"People may be surprised that I've chosen to play this role but I loved the script,” she said. "And I've always wanted to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe. Also, as an aspiring actress, I felt this was a great challenge and would be a lot of fun as well."

Discotivity will debut at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival in August, followed by a stint at London’s Arts Theatre in December.
