On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree
I have a confession to make. Until about five minutes ago, I had no idea what Brenda Lee looked like. I always envisioned her having a Kate Hudson in Almost Famous look, a playful, sexy, quirky personality that was somehow the direct manifestation of all the spunkiness she crooned about in “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.” It turns out she was a Southerner with an uncontrolled behave haircut. I guess you can’t win ‘em all. But none of this takes away from just how incredibly awesome her trademark song is.
Clocking in at just over two minutes, “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” is a whimsical tale of holiday lore. The tune tells the story of a December get together with mistletoe, pumpkin pie, and even some caroling. While never directly stated, there’s definitely also some spiked eggnog going around with all the Christmas cheer at this party hop. Dancing in a new old-fashioned way? Try and tell me that’s possible sober. It’s not.
While the complete dearth of any obscenities gives it away as an oldie, Brenda Lee’s tune still sounds as feisty and festive as ever. Just put it on at a Christmas shindig and see what happens. People will be slamming champagne and grinding their middles together within seconds. It’s almost an unconscious response.
Here’s a clip of classic movies with a little “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” accompaniment...
