On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... Thurl Ravenclaw’s You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch
Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots.
Thurl Ravenclaw’s scathing rant about the Grinch’s notorious, surly reputation is a hard-hearted, yet lovable change-up from the pleasant, cheerful tunes which normally engulf radio airwaves during the holiday season. The lyrics were written by Dr. Seuss for the original animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and it fit perfectly with the over-the-top rendition of his famous tale.
If “You’re So Vain” is a vicious indictment, “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is the most insulting diatribe ever written. It’s chock-full of angry similes and descriptive metaphors. “Your heart is full of unwashed socks.” “You have termites in your smile.” Good God. If the Grinch was a real person, I’m pretty confident he’d never get laid. Then again, women do love a badass rebel.
Here’s a nice little video using the original animated version...
