On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...
The Chipmunk’s “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)”
What’s on your Christmas list? Me, I want a hula hoop.
Written by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr.—a.k.a. David Seville—in 1958, the Chipmunk Song is probably one of the most popular contemporary Christmas tunes. Although it was written and sung by Bagdasarian (in the form of a chipmunk voice), the singing credits are given to The Chipmunks. It’s not often a fictional singing group gets recognition for their vocal performance, let alone a fictional group consisting of three chipmunks. In researching for this piece, I found out they’re a five-time Grammy Award-winning animated music group. Is that even a category?
Anyway, the song actually reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the Chipmunks' first—and only—single. According to Ross Bagdasarian, Jr., the single sold 4.5 million copies. Who knew that speeding up the playback to create those annoying yet somehow lovable high-pitched, squeaky voices would help create one of the most fun Christmas songs? The Chipmunks delightfully document the heart of children during the holiday by begging Christmas not to be late because of the list of toys they want. I still want a hula hoop!
