On November 11, Mudcrutch (Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh) will release Extended Play Live, 4-song EP culled from the band’s brief concert tour in the wake of its eponymous debut album earlier this year. ... read more |

Yes that Glen Campbell. On his comeback album, the sixties and seventies country crossover giant offers his takes on the songs of modern artists like Tom Petty, The Replacements, and U2. This is what a great Glen Campbell album is actually supposed to sound like in 2008. It’s damn fine listening

Anybody remember Glen Campbell? Now eyeing a musical comeback, the country singer/guitarist plans to reintroduce himself to the music world on August 19 with a new album called, appropriately enough, Meet Glen Campbell, featuring cover versions of songs by Tom Petty, U2, and The Replacements ... read more |

Woah Black Betty, Bam-A-Lam! It’s June 1st, the first day non-scientists officially begin thinking about summer, that three-month stretch of hot weather and hotter chicks when minivans full of snot-nosed kids invade all the best frisbee golf courses and the Cubs convince me this may, in fact, be the year ... read more |

When I first heard about this project, my hopes were through the roof. The experience is slightly deflating, then, to pop the disc in for the first time and hear not driving, keyboard-chaperoned, electric-guitar rock as “Scare Easy” implied, but ditty-down-home twang guitar and an electric country vibe akin to the Eagles’ early material ... read more |

Mudcrutch, a band Tom Petty started in 1970 and a precursor to the Heartbreakers, was a local hometown hero in Gainsville, Florida in the early ‘70s. Unfortunately, they never broke through to the national spotlight and never made a full album, eventually breaking up to make way for the Heartbreakers we know and love ... read more |

They tease us, act selfishly, and even sleep with our friends on occasion, but goddamnit, if we don’t still spend hours and hours thinking up ways to make them smile. A beautiful woman may have been behind every war ever fought, but her delicate effervescence also manifests itself in every piece of art ever created. Seems like a fair tradeoff to me ... read more |

If you are willing to both haul yourself to the pastoral Pemberton, as well as shell out the whopping $239 dollars to shake your ass to Jay-Z and then act mystifyingly bored during Death Cab For Cutie, the Pemberton Festival will quite possibly be the niftiest place to be this summer ... read more |

Who knows if this trend will last? Next year, hundreds of millions of viewers may be forced to watch The Academy Is perform painful duets with Norah Jones, but for three-hundred and sixty-five days, we all get to fondly remember Tom Petty crooning “Won’t Back Down.” Bill Belichick might not enjoy reminiscing about it, but I’m pretty sure almost everyone else will ... read more |

Like a small handful of other unfortunates on the planet Earth, I am holding up what seems to be my annual tradition of having to work on Super Bowl Sunday, and up until now I wasn’t that disappointed about it. I’m one of “those people” who doesn’t follow football, or even care about football, being in it for the party, the commercials, and of course the illustrious halftime show ... read more |

Hot off the heels of their Super Bowl Halftime deal, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have decided to criss-cross both the States and the Great White North. The fifty-seven year old rocker hinted before last summer’s tour that it may have been his last one, but obviously, we now know those retirement cakes were a little premature. Still, it’s probably a safe bet he’ll start slowing down sometime; so, I’d advise heading to Ticketmaster immediately ... read more |

Like Enrico Fermi (2), I’ll research, dissect, and eventually, split open the most noteworthy musical events of the previous week, causing a chain reaction that may or may not change life as we know it. Along the way, I’ll keep a running count of every famous person mentioned, hopefully hitting 50 by the article’s “it was all a dream” ending. Ready? Than like Alex Trebek’s (3) moustache, I’m off ... read more |

Nothing is finalized but an insider close to Paula has confirmed she’s entertaining the offer. This woman is a money-making machine. Her line of jewelry recently sold out in less than a week (that’s over 30,000 sales), and her choreography talents are still highly sought after. Remember the cheerleading scene in American Beauty? That was her. Tom Hanks’ keyboard dancing in Big? Her again. And Lord knows how much she gets payed to praise everything on American Idol ... read more |

Most of you probably know what you’re in for with this column, but I’ll give a brief overview for any new readers. Basically, I’m going to frisk and strip search all the biggest music-related stories from the past week. By the article’s money shot, I’ll have reached fifty obscure associations, all noted in parenthesis. Are you ready? Than like Amelia Earthart’s (2) radio, I’m out! ... read more |

It’s not that I believe Tom Petty has lost all songwriting skills. Let’s face it, Tom was never the greatest song writer. But, juxtaposing Tom Petty’s voice with Mike Campbell’s guitar rifts is like having sex between Egyptian cotton sheets—it may not be the most technically astounding collaboration, but it sure fucking feels good. So, when I heard that Mr. Petty would be playing the annual half-time show during the Superbowl this year, I did not brush the occasion off as another year of wretched boob flashes or weird ensembles ... read more |
