Can you feel Cadbury’s new TV ad comin’ in the air tonight? I can’t. Not since it was announced that soft rock stealth ninja assassin Phil Collins will no longer have the backing soundtrack - in fact, I don’t want to taste another gooey, sugar-yolked egg.
British confections company Cadbury Schweppes, known for their viciously addictive Creme Eggs, is changing their TV ad campaign and giving Collins the shaft, NME reported Tuesday. Cadbury has apparently been selling candy throughout all of 2007 via a TV ad featuring a gorilla playing the drums to Phil Collins’ 1981 hit “In The Air Tonight.” Where this off-the-wall concept came from and what it has to do with chocolate escapes my feeble intellect, but it definitely makes me wish I had visited the rainy isles at some point in the last year.
The ad opens with a (quite obviously tongue-in-cheek) power-moment as a giant gorilla flares his nostrils and grooves to the skinny-tied-and-tapered-slacked ‘80s hit. The ape then explodes to life on a seven-piece kit just as the well known drum track kicks in. This ingenious little number, thought to be behind a 5% sales increase for Cadbury last year, will instead be replaced by an ad featuring another, as-yet-unnamed, soft-rock dreadnaught and starring an animated airport luggage truck. This should be interesting, though it will admittedly have difficult shoes to fill.
For everyone who spent 2007 here in hot-dog-land watching TV that makes sense, here is what you missed:
