Is the world ready for a new supergroup featuring one of the world's best guitarists joining forces with a Red Hot Chili Pepper and the remnants of the "Van Hagar" edition of Van Halen?
According to reports published at Yahoo Music and other sources, they had better be. After first performing together during the encore of a February Sammy Hagar solo concert, what may be the world's unlikeliest supergroup ever have announced plans to record an album, and perhaps even follow it up with a tour.
The as yet officially unnamed group will feature vocalist Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony from Van Halen, combining forces with guitarist extraordinaire Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
As for a name? The moniker Chickenfoot has been most often rumored as a possibility.
"As soon as Sammy and myself finish touring our separate solo tours we'll reconvene in Northern California and finish the record. We hope to mix the album in January, have it ready for April, and then we'll follow it up with a tour," Satriani recently told Billboard.com.
If the material played by the band during the Hagar solo show -- which included cover versions of songs by Traffic and Led Zeppelin -- is any indication, the band will definitely be rooted in traditional rock and roll, despite the various influences brought to the table by each of the individuals involved.
"We all bring to the table some unusual influences, and then we also share a lot of roots. And I think that's where a true color of a band comes out, just how we react to each other. So, it's definitely rock music. We haven't brought each other together to do a techno record," Satriani said.
