Just in case you were still not sure, yes, Radiohead is an ethereal being sent directly from Jesus to save the world from evil. That much is supported by the band’s numerous environmental and socioeconomic undertakings – you may have heard rumors that the band only plays in cities that offer public transportation, and we’re sure you’ve seen the latest socially aware video. (It’s here, in case you haven’t.)
Well, top-secret information leaked from inside the musical activists’ metaphorical campsite has not only confirmed these rumors, but has gushingly praised the band for the extent to which they put their money where their mouth is.
NME reported Friday that Liars, the opening act that joined Radiohead for the first leg of their US tour, penned a lengthy diatribe on the green-thinking ways Radiohead follows on tour in order to minimize carbon emissions and waste produced by the band and its entourage. Among the measures taken are water tour flasks, which everyone uses rather than disposable cups; an entire fleet of tour buses and trucks that run on biofuel; and the banning of air freight, which as we know, consumes mad dino-gas and pollutes, like, a shitload. These revelations and others, including advice given by Radiohead on running a band successfully, are posted on the Liars’ Myspace blog, which reads like the diary of someone who was introduced to the Pope.
Personally, the biofuel initiative impresses me – it actually impresses me beyond the desire to jab Radiohead for ritualistically converting people to “Radioheadism,” like they’re a cult, or a rapidly spreading religion. It’s expensive to convert one car to biodiesel, so converting tour buses and trucks (and more than one of each, it sounds like) is a task taken on only by bands who really care about this stuff. High-fives to Radiohead. I’ll see you guys at the meetings.
