Black Francis Plays Impromptu Gig, Police Intervene

Black Francis Plays Impromptu Gig, Police Intervene Police had to step in and escort Black Francis away from the scene of an impromptu street performance the former Pixies front man was putting on in Dublin, Ireland, NME reported Monday.

Francis, alias Frank Black, had attracted the attention of about 1,000 Dubliners who amassed in a park Saturday, where he was performing solo material as well as the stray Pixies number. It seems rather than play encores at his normally scheduled shows, Black has taken to playing what he calls “pre-cores” in random locations, which he lets his fans choose – this according to Indie Corner, which also hosts a digital camera video of Black’s police car trying to navigate through a swarm of Irish Pixies fans, who are slapping the car and hollering, “rock and roll!”

Despite the appearance that Black was being arrested, NME reported that police were only moving him along in an attempt to disburse the crowd. According to Indie Corner, he only received a warning from police before picking up where he had left off further down the street, where witness accounts have the entire crowd singing along with “Monkey Gone to Heaven.”

This strange but magnificent event is to be followed by two more pre-core performances Black took the liberty to announce – one in Manchester and one in London – to precede the Shockwaves NME Award Shows scheduled for venues near those locations.

Here is a three-fold example of how awesome Frank Black is: that he invented a cooler way to play his encores, that he continued after the police told him to stop, and that he had a thousand Irish people yelling “rock and roll.” I would like to shake that man’s hand someday, except for my suspicion that he may be completely insane.

Is Dublin North Korea? 1,000 people and the police get all twitchy? WTF! What happens around Christmas shopping days? Tear gas, German Shepards and helicopters?

Obviously all crime has gone solved, perpertrators convicted such that the police have nothing better to do.

"There will be no music in the streets of Dublin, and no crowds larger than two people."
