Perhaps I’m just a city slicker, but I’ve never gotten into country music much beyond Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. So when I was asked to review Gretchen Wilson’s new album, One Of The Boys, I thought, Crap! I’m going to have nothing to say and I’m only going to offend country fans by implying that they are a few shades redder on the back of the neck … in an affectionate and humorous way, of course.
Now, however, I’m checking my neck in the mirror, because I actually like the album.
To get the obvious criticism of Wilson’s third album out of the way--it immediately seems to have a continuity issue. Get this: The album is called One Of The Boys, and the opening track is called “Girl I Am.” This is where I’d usually make some pompous quip, but this one tells itself.
According to one Web site, Wilson worked her way out of poverty and eventually starting singing at Kmart … sorry, Kmart? Since when does Kmart have live music? I imagine now that she’s a big Grammy-winning superstar, she plays at Wal-Mart.
Some slide guitar parts in the album, working in unison with the fiddle, provide a quintessential country vibe that sounds out of this world at points. Also, some songs, such as You Don’t Have To Go Home, have some great instrumental work that occasionally strays from traditional, fast-picking country guitar and seeps into something with a little rock ‘n roll in it.
Wilson has been said to be a star that speaks her mind in her songs and thereby comes across as an authentic personality. This album is no exception; in the opening lines of the title track, Wilson explains that she can hold her booze as well as any guy and beat him in a game of pool too. And if that doesn’t do it for you (gentlemen), a lengthy glance at her sensual photo on the album will. Let’s just say that it’s obvious, as she says on the album, that she’s not just one of the boys.
