Janet Jackson boyfriend Jermaine Dupri has reportedly stepped down as president of Island Records Urban Music division. The thirty-six year old producer and rapper took the post less than two years ago, initiating a cross promotional with Tag Body Spray but was largely unsuccessful in discovering or promoting many new artists. He lured Jackson over from Virgin Records, but even her newest release sold less than five hundred thousand units, a disappointment when compared against some of her past multi-platinum albums.
According to Billboard, neither side has commented publicly on the split; so, it’s unclear whether he left amicably or was forced out by label head Antonio ’L.A.’ Reid. Only time will tell what Dupri plans to do from here on out, but at only thirty-six, his future seems pretty bright in the music industry.
Here’s to hoping Dupri gets back to producing and starts making hit records again.
