Dylan Works Hit Classroom

Bob Dylan has always been considered a poet and a visionary in both elitist folk circles and the cultural conscious, but high schools have, as a whole, been slow to recognize the teaching ability of music in the classroom. It seems that’s about to change. Starting this year, students in merry old England will be studying Zimmerman’s words along with those of Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen, and Sylvia Plath in a special poetry unit.

According to Music-News, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and many other Dylan classics will be presented for National Poetry Day. It’s about time. I had a special music unit in my 12th grade creative writing class, and the auditory influenced month was absolutely fascinating. Sadly, this progression of teaching ideals has not yet forwarded itself to most of Middle America, but I have a feeling the addition of lyrics is not a long way off. Until then, US students can have fun reading The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot.
