We all know the story—Elvis Presley made a guest appearance on the Ed Sullivan show back on September 9, 1956. Later crowned the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, he performed “Love Me Tender,” “Ready Teddy,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” and the unstoppable classic “Hound Dog.” His appearance garnered so much attention that the show had him on again October 28, 1956, repeating the set with the addition of “Love Me.” As we all know, nothing revolutionary can come without controversy.
The big issue at that time was the show’s discomfort over how Elvis moved his feet and swayed his hips (did he ever give Forrest Gump his due credit for that?). With little hesitation, the show’s producers decided to only record Elvis from the waist up for his third appearance on January 6, 1957. That would be the last time Elvis ever appeared on live television, because it was just too sexy. However, that did little to stop the rock revolution (inadvertently or advertently) ignited by his display.
As Reuters reports, all three of the King’s performances on the Ed Sullivan show will be converted to DVD by Image Entertainment. The Andrew Solt-produced 3-DVD set titled Elvis Presley: The Sullivan Shows will be released November 21st. And better yet, the discs will feature the uncut versions of Elvis's musical numbers along with each show in its entirety, including guests and original commercial breaks.
But what might really motivate people to buy this package is the remastered 8mm home movie of Presley in 1955, home videos of his family, as well as interviews with Ed Sullivan show insiders. Sounds like a heck of a stocking stuffer.
