Everclear Pumps Up the Troops

By Peter Kimmich: 2008-05-15 21:15:11

Everclear Pumps Up the Troops I remember Everclear – they were one of the first bands I liked without knowing exactly why.

“Santa Monica” came out of the shitty radio speakers in my friend’s older brother’s shitty car as he drove us to shitty high school, and it wasn’t exactly a genius song, but it did the trick, whatever the trick was. “Father of Mine” came out of my headphones as I sat in my room listening to the radio because there was nothing to do in my town, and it wasn’t as poetic or as complex as a lot of other bands’ songs, but when I heard it, its message also came through loud and clear.

I think it’s the honesty in Art Alexakis’ voice. He doesn’t have the pipes of an American Idol contestant, and he doesn’t try to write rock operas or anything – but if he did, I think it would only subtract from his band. His ultra-bleached hair and baggy, new-age bro shirts give him a slightly cornball ‘90s surfer-dude vibe that contradicts the vulnerability in his music, and that makes him interesting. I think Chuck Klosterman would agree with me.

At any rate, Everclear has announced their beachy ways will be onstage in front of the US Naval base at Guantanamo Bay over Memorial Day weekend, putting on a performance for the troops stationed there, NME reported Wednesday. Yes, that’s in Cuba. This patriotic and slightly risky showing will be followed by an even more Uncle Sam-oriented performance for the 4th of July at the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu.

Alexakis is stoked, dude, about the upcoming performances. “There are folks in uniform all over the world, and at home, looking out for us -- and to play for them is an honor,” he said, adding, “Not a bad way to spend the holiday weekends.”

If it weren’t for the fact that those parties will be graced with an atypically high concentration of live artillery, I would be all for packing up the barbecue. As it stands, I’m allergic to hollow-point. So I probably won’t be there. I do, however, extend a (very) long-distance high-five to Everclear for supporting the troops. Come back alive, boys.
