George Michael Closes Out Career Phase

By Rema Rahman: 2008-03-24 15:30:20
George Michael Closes Out Career Phase George Michael’s stage presence has run the gamut from hopping around in white booty shorts to TKwhipping himself into leather jackets and earrings. Like the rest of the 1980s, these images belong hidden away safely with lock and key, and thankfully, that’s exactly what he plans to do after one more tour, of course.

On the heels of an 80-show European tour, the UK singer embarks on US appearances this summer, in support of his new album, Twenty-Five due April 1. Uninspired by recent emerging music trends such as illegal downloading and American Idol, Michael sees this as a “rounding off” of his career at this point. "It's the end of a certain era, and I'm not sure how much I really want to be a part of what's next. So, it's a kind of a way of saying thank you to everybody before I move on."

Unfortunately, the singer says he has become “too old” to perform classics like “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “I Want Your Sex.” Darn. But fear not, Michael fans. He still promises “Careless Whisper” though he admits hating the song. After the tour, the singer won’t give up music entirely just yet, promising to become “the Tony Bennett for my generation." Great. Nothing to make me feel old as sin as a major childhood music figure getting a residency in Vegas.
